What My Divorce Taught Me About My Business Part 2
Lesson #2 – Letting Go
But what does it really mean to let go of something? Google will tell you it means to “allow someone or something to escape or go free” or to “relinquish one’s grip on someone or something.” So often in life we try to control situations, and we don’t always realize that’s what we are doing.
What does this have to do with business? This quote sums it up nicely!
“Remember, you can’t reach what’s in front of you until you let go of what’s behind you.” ~Author Unknown
Sometimes we just have to let go of a person or situation. It could be in our personal life or in business. For me, my ex along with the drama has been a major energy suck. Imagine someone letting the air out of a balloon, well that’s how I felt but happening very slowly. There are many things I learned about his past that I could have obsessed over – why, is it all true, and so on. Instead, I would take a deep breath and say out loud, let it go. And I truly meant it. Although some things took a little more effort than others to let go.
Here’s the main point, for each thing I would allow to take my energy, that was something else it was taking energy away from. Then I started to look at my business, what was taking my energy? What did I need to let go? Things in our business often mirror our personal life.
Important Takeaways
- I was supposed to have a Spring launch for my Virtual Assistant Training program. I decided I just couldn’t do it, I didn’t have the time or energy. I also didn’t feel the need to explain to others in detail why it wasn’t happening. It meant less cash flow, but I knew it would add stress, mean lost sleep, and I would not be delivering what the students deserved because I would not be delivering at my best.
- Control – many times we think we can do things better than others. But that leads us to do too much and being frustrated because we never get everything done we want. So I have been delegating more and realizing it doesn’t have to be perfect. I’m also looking at how can we create better processes so when I do delegate it’s clear what needs to happen. This will help ensure things are done correctly.
- The idea others always have to be happy. Sometimes this might be with a client, a colleague, really anyone that I deal with in my business. You can’t make everyone happy. Once you realize and accept that, you can let go of that pressure you have put on yourself and you will feel lighter once doing so.
