How To Use Your Experience to Work From Home

There are so many women just like you that want to work from home. And you know what question I get most often?

The question is, “What skills can I offer? I don’t think I have anything I can do from home and make decent money!”

You may be one of the people asking (or at least thinking about) this question, and I am happy to tell you that you DO have skills to offer. You just need a little help figuring them out, and that’s what I am here to do.

Skill is the unified force of experience, intellect and passion in their operation.
~John Ruskin

I’m going to walk you through the first step of the three-step process to help you figure out what would be a good fit you!

The first step is what I call the Experience Inventory. This is where you get clear on all the work you’ve done in the past and how it has given you the skills you need to work from home!

  • Think about each job you’ve had, starting with your first one ever! Even if it was babysitting for your neighbor at age 12.
  • Then list what you learned from that job. This = skills.
  • Then from that skill list, we will pull out what you loved doing.
  • By the end, you will have a complete skill list based off your experience!

Think about your very first job, what was it?

Mine was McDonald’s, for not even a month!

What did you learn from your first job? List those skills below in one column.

For example, from my job at McDonald’s:

  • I learned to follow a process (I still remember pickles are dating, not mating, on the burgers)!
  • I learned to work with a team and how to multi-task.
  • I learned to focus and remember things in high-pressure situations. Saturday mornings for breakfast were insane, and I still remember cute classmates coming in and me trying to play it cool and not screw up their order!
  • Now in a second column, list those skills you enjoyed doing from column one.

Keep following this process with all your subsequent jobs!

There’s more to working from home than just having skills, though, am I right? You want to make sure you’re going to be passionate about what you do and that it works with your schedule. There’s nothing worse than having a job you hate and/or one that doesn’t work with your life!

While I don’t discuss the other factors in this post, I’m not going to leave you in the lurch! You can sign up here to get my free Work From Home Guidebook. Not only does it help you think through these other factors, there are also more examples from my own work experience on how to do this Experience Inventory.
